The discovery of an oil leak in a field off the coast of this country will test the country’s judicial system and its oil industry regulatory process. The leak was discovered in the Roncador field which lies alongside Chevron’s Frade field. This was the scene of two spills that occurred in the past few years that have led to multibillion-dollar lawsuits against Chevron. A court ordered that the passports of Chevron executives be withheld, including that of Chevron’s chief executive in the country George Buck. The prosecutor is also demanding the executives serve prison sentences, including 31 years in jail for Mr. Buck. This was despite the small size of the leaks, with the first amounting to 3,000 barrels of crude and the second which Chevron said was less than one barrel.

1. Nigeria
2. Brazil
